Pedrick Road Overcrossing to Yolo County Line
June 26, 2025
This project focused on rehabilitating the pavement on Interstate 80, extending from just west of the Pedrick Road Overcrossing near Dixon to the Yolo County line, including connector ramps on Highway 113. The scope of work included grinding the existing asphalt concrete, paving with rubberized hot mix asphalt (RHMA), and overlaying with an open-graded friction course (OGFC).
Interstate 80 in this rural section of Solano County varies from three to six lanes and includes key access points to the University of California, Davis campus and the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. These factors required careful coordination of ramp closures to minimize disruption.
Originally scheduled for 210 working days, this A+B contract was awarded to Granite Construction, which bid the project at just 58 working days. Through close collaboration, the team completed the project significantly ahead of schedule.
Key Successes:
- Dedicated two hot mix asphalt plants and two paving crews to produce and place approximately 125,000 tons of HMA.
- Effectively coordinated work hours and closures while keeping the public informed via Highway Advisory Radio, fixed changeable message signs, a dedicated Twitter account (@Pave80), and the project website (Pave80.com).
- Developed a process for collecting duplicate HMA core and on-site material samples for independent testing, ensuring transparency in quality incentive evaluations.
- Secured agreement for a full closure of the Highway 113 connector ramp, allowing Meyers & Sons to complete structural work efficiently and safely, with minimal impact on traffic.
