Job Number: 0052

The Route 50/5 Sacramento Design-Build Project was completed in the summer of 2014 across Sacramento and Yolo Counties. This project focused on critical bridge maintenance for two major structures: the Sacramento River Viaduct on Highway 50 and the West End Viaduct on Interstate 5. Key maintenance activities included the application of bridge deck overlays, replacement of joint seals and joint seal assemblies, and correction of drainage issues. The Sacramento River Viaduct received a two-layer multi-layer polymeric overlay totaling 3/8", while the West End Viaduct was treated with a 3/4" polyester overlay. The latter also involved the use of a thin mix to form shoulders and on/off ramp gores. In addition to the main structures, associated on-ramps, off-ramps, and connector ramps received similar maintenance treatments. The project rehabilitated nearly four miles of highway and included:
  • 1,425 cubic yards of polyester polymer concrete overlay
  • 30 cubic yards of unsound concrete repair
  • 350 cubic yards of approach slab replacement
  • 10,000 linear feet of joint seal replacement
  • 1,300,000 square feet of multi-layer polymeric overlay
Due to a compressed schedule and the high volume of work, the project team completed approximately $100,000 worth of work per day, showcasing exceptional coordination and execution.
