Scofield Avenue Bridge
March 18, 2015
Due to delays in the initial contract award, the project faced a compressed timeline with only 82 calendar days to complete critical bridge replacements ahead of the Bay Bridge closure over Labor Day weekend. Myers & Sons Construction fast-tracked submittals and prioritized work through a collaborative partnering framework, allowing immediate mobilization on essential tasks.
Two key milestones were identified to mitigate schedule risk: the first involved constructing a traffic crossover to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction by detouring westbound lanes onto the eastbound side of I-580. The second milestone focused on the demolition and replacement of 60,000 square feet of bridge deck across three structures, requiring complex traffic staging and coordination.
Cost discussions related to scope changes were addressed post-construction under a “Good Faith Partnering” approach. Despite design challenges and numerous changes, the project was delivered on time, within budget, and with no claims. The team’s performance earned both the AGC Partnering Award and the Caltrans Partnering in Motion Award.
