5-50 Design Build

March 18, 2015 The Route 50/5 Sacramento Design-Build Project took place in Sacramento and Yolo Counties during the summer of 2014. The two major Sacramento structures located on Highway 50 (Sacramento River Viaduct) and Interstate 5 (West End Viaduct) received bridge maintenance measures including overlays, replacement of joint seals and joint seal assemblies, and the correction of drainage issues. The Sacramento River Viaduct received two layers of a multi-layer overlay creating a 3/8” overlay while the West End Viaduct received a 3/4” polyester overlay which included the use of a thin mix to form shoulders and on/off ramp gores. Associated on-ramps, off-ramps, and connector ramps also received similar maintenance during the course of the design project. There were a total of nearly 4 miles of highway rehabilitated that included 1,425 cubic yards of polyester polymer concrete overlay, 30 cubic yards of unsound concrete repair, 350 cubic yards of approach slab replacement, 10,000 linear feet of joint seal replacement and 1,300,000 square feet of multi-layer polymeric overlay. The compressed schedule and high volume of work required completing approximately $100,000.00 of work daily.
