Richmond Sludge Thickener Design Build
June 26, 2025
The City of Richmond’s Sludge Thickener Project is a major upgrade to the Richmond Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, aimed at improving solids handling and operational efficiency. The project included construction of a new sludge thickening facility featuring rotary drum thickeners (RDTs), new WAS and RDT feed pumps, a Rotamix sludge mixing system, and an advanced odor control system. Supporting infrastructure included reinforced concrete tanks, SCADA and electrical upgrades, yard piping, and structural improvements. The facility enhances sludge concentration prior to digestion, reduces energy use, and lowers operational costs. Construction is complete, and the facility is now awaiting final permit approval for operational testing and demolition of the old infrastructure.
