The ACWD Groundwater PFAS Treatment Facility Project consisted of the construction of a new groundwater PFAS Treatment Facility at the District’s Blending Facility. Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) have been detected in the District’s groundwater supply, including Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (PFOS) and Perfluorohexane Sulfonate (PFHxS) at levels above the California State Water Resources Control Board. This project installed a 6 million gallon per day ion exchange PFAS treatment facility to remove PFAS from the District’s groundwater sources. The project included the installation of piping, concrete slabs, pre-filters, vertical turbine pumps, filter vessels, electrical equipment, instrumentation, and miscellaneous civil and site improvements. Construction by Myers & Sons began in December 2023. The new treatment facility was placed in service in September 2024, while additional site restoration and automation equipment were installed through March 2025. The Project is now complete and producing treated water without PFAS, which is being delivered to the community. The facility can be expanded to a 15 MGD capacity if deemed necessary in the future.Time was of the essence on this project, given the current capacity limitations at the District’s Blending Facility, which were exacerbated by the higher PFAS levels in their groundwater. The Project had a very aggressive timeline and the absence of Construction challenges and electrical equipment lead time are not common, however, with the core relationship established through partnering with the District and goals towards the common mission, issues were identified and resolved in a true collaborative method, with minimal cost and schedule impact on the overall project.
